YouTube: Soon you can share your phono videos in true HD!

Post by MordEth »

Honestly, I don’t think that anyone (except perhaps phonophan79) is likely to take advantage of this, but in case anyone is interested, YouTube was pleased to announce:

1080p HD Is Coming to YouTube

We're excited to say that support for watching 1080p HD videos in full resolution is on its way. Starting next week, YouTube's HD mode will add support for viewing videos in 720p or 1080p, depending on the resolution of the original source, up from our maximum output of 720p today.

As resolution of consumer cameras increases, we want to make sure YouTube is the best home on the web to showcase your content. For viewers with big monitors and a fast computer, try switching to 1080p to get the most out of the fullscreen experience.

[deletia: examples of various resolutions]

Have an HD camera? We would love to see your awesome 1080p videos! Be creative and choose subjects that really show off the beauty of your camera. We will run the best examples on our homepage in a future spotlight.

And those of you who have already uploaded in 1080p, don't worry. We're in the process of re-encoding your videos so we can show them the way you intended.
Feel free to check out the video stills of the various resolutions on the official YouTube blog entry. :D

I think that I’d be more excited if they were talking about higher audio bitrates or lossless codecs (which would result in phonograph videos on YouTube sounding better, as opposed to having the potential to look better). Oh well. They’re trying. ;)

Hey, not bad... but still, my HD phono videos aren't bad as-is... but soon they'll be re-encoded in 1080p, hooray!

*shameless self-promotion of some my HD phono videos* :D

Great videos. Thanks for posting. What's that little victrola to the right of your Edisonic?

Looks like a German made Electrola "Novaves & Berlin"?

I had one and it sounded great for such a little phono.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Valecnik: In the Edisonic video, the machine next to it is an HMV 103 (with missing doors). That was actually my first ever non-Edison phonograph. It really does a good job.

It can be seen in this video, but was made before I got my HD camera.

Phonophan79 it appears your videos are coming across in HD format already. They look (and sound) really good. What model of camera are you using?

I've been uploading some too. They don't look as crisp as yours but still not bad I guess. You can see a few examples recently posted in the music section of TMF.

Valecnik -

I enjoyed your video... I am using a Sony HDR-HC5 camcorder.

Your video camera does a good job, that is an HD camera? If so, then I suspect you are doing something wrong in the upload wrong in the YouTube upload process.

I'm not sure what format your camera uses, but if you have an HD camera what we see on YouTube should be full 16:9 format, that is widescreen format taking up the entire screen.

Sony cameras (and most all of their products) use proprietary formats when possible, meaning the output format of a video file from a Sony camera has to be converted from its .m2t format to .mp4 format before I can upload it to YouTube.

Either way, when I do this conversion, I make sure the video width/height is in 1280x720.

If you were to change your video width/height to 1280x720 and re-upload it to YouTube, I suspect you'd see a much better video quality.

Phonophan79,

My camera is an older Sony DCR-HC90. It's not HD. I'll try your suggestion. I'm not quite sure how to change the format to 1280x720 but should be able to figure it out. :monkey: I noticed it was not wide enoough but only after I'd uploaded everything and it was too much of a pain to redo them.

Thanks alot!
