Mobley Long Throat Reproducer
I recently bought a Mobley long throat reproducer. I have seen Mobley cylinder reproducers but never for a disk machine. Does anyone have any information on these. How rare are they? It has a large screw on the backside of the needle bar. It is hard to see but the screw pushes a coil spring that touches the back of the needle bar at the pivot point. The markings on the back say "Manuf'd Under Mobleys Patent May 8th 1900 Others Pending"

Re: Mobley Long Throat Reproducer
The patent only shows cylinder reproducers but it covers the diaphragm so it's still valid for a disc reproducer.

Rene,
Thanks for the Patent information. Have you ever seen one like this? Would these be sold as an accessory? If so, I am wondering if they were sold by mail order, or at a shop, or ?

These have been shown in certain books on antique phonographs. The H&S Sound Boxes were offered to retailers in the same way other H&S merchandise was wholesaled, and then retailed through a shop. They show up on occasion. Here's an ad from the November 1905 issue of The Talking Machine World:

Ken, I hope this is still on topic (well, related at least): Referring to another excellent thread you started discussing various reproducer volume controls, I posted a reply (Apr 12, 2015 9:44 am) here http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... it=+mobley showing a "The Balance" lateral disc record adapter (sporting a Mobley diaphragm) for Edison DD machines. The wording on that diaphragm reads "MOBLEY DIAPHRAGM PAT'D MAY 8, 1900". As Rene pointed out, the patent covers the diaphragm, so it's still valid for both cylinder and disc reproducers. I mentioned the diaphragm in that earlier thread, but failed to show a picture of it at that time. So here it is...
Nice find Ken,

Thanks for the responses. So, if Mobely patented the diaphragm, Did Hawthorne & Sheble make the bodies for the reproducers?

The needle bar looks a lot like a Busy Bee disc machine needle bar.

Hawthorne & Sheble made the entire sound box.Phono-Phan wrote:Thanks for the responses. So, if Mobely patented the diaphragm, Did Hawthorne & Sheble make the bodies for the reproducers?

I have the Model 100 with the original H&S box. It is for a tapering arm. High quality reproducer to be sure.
Enjoy! Joe
