One thing to keep in mind is that the feds drag their feet for approval of tax exempt status. It took my organization over a year and a half. In California, we have a one year grace between filing and being granted tax exempt status, but we had to file on the second year, even though we didn't receive our determination letter until 7 months into the year. Technically, during that second year, we should have had our 501(c)(3) status. We held off on fundraising until all our ducks were in a row, but we probably wouldn't have had any problems if we had.

Just an update....

On March 14, 2016 the Internal Revenue Service approved our 501(c)(3) tax exempt status which is effective as of January 19, 2016. This means that contributions to Early 1900 Music Preservation in the United States are now tax deductible to the fullest extent provided by law.

A copy of our Letter of Determination from the Internal Revenue Service can be viewed or downloaded on our website or at the following link: http://early1900s.org/letter_of_determination.pdf

Good to hear that the IRS ducks are all in a row. Wishing the station many years of success.
