Victor Orthophonic Soundboxes: code letter on backplate ?

Has anyone noticed small, faint code-letters marked on the back-plate of Orthophonic Soundboxes ?

I have noticed on several pot-metal sound boxes the letter "B" or "C" on the back-plate, beneath the second letter "O" in the word "Orthophonic".

They seem to be stamped: they are too perfect and uniform to have been scratched-into the metal free-hand. This suggests to me that they are factory markings.

Does anyone know the significance of these letters ? :monkey:
