Motor Noise?

I've been working on a single spring Victor motor, and I've got it up and running.

There is some noise when it is running, and I'm fairly certain it is from either the spindle shaft, the gear that is on it (has two sets of teeth: one for governor and one for intermediate gear), or the ball bearing underneath it.

The noise is like a rhythmic rattling every revolution of the turntable. (Kind of like a cat purring but more metallic sounding) It is soft enough to not scare someone, but still pretty intrusive. I can hear the quiet putter of the governor,(which is usually the only thing I hear on a good motor) and then this noise as well.

Anyone got any suggestions? I've heard this same motor on other machines and it does not sound like this!

Are you referring to the early style motor with the bevel gears?

I don't believe so. The one I have is the one that goes in portables like the VV-50 and VV-35

Here is a clip of the motor. I'm almost certain it is the sindle gear. My theory is that the ball bearing underneath is rattling around in its cup.

A video of the motor instead of the turntable would have been more informative..but..given what I hear...

1) Check the governor weights and springs for looseness, they should all be taut, if not it will cause a rhythmic sound
2) Do some gradual adjustments of the play in the governor to see if the sound worsens or improves.
3) if all else fails the spindle gear may be worn

Sounds like the noise is related to the governor; that is the fastest spinning bit in the machine, and the rhythm of this noise is about the same as "governor purr", only louder.

If you remove the platter, is the noise still there ?

Yes the noise still exists when I take the turntable off. I'll try fiddling with the governor.

Would an uneven friction leather, as in one that contacts the governor wheel with just a small portion of the leather, pose a problem? As compared to one that contacts it fully with a flat surface?

Sounds like governor adjustment to me.

How much end play is in the bearings? How closely do the worm gear and spindle gear mesh?

I have fiddled with the governor play and have found that no play has the least noise. I know there is supposed to be a little play though. Here is a picture of the worm gear position (motor is upside down, but I had my hand under pushing the spindle up)

Loosen that spindle gear screw..slide the gear up along spindle..look for the set screw indentation on the spindle and make sure that set screw sinks in there. Recheck the screws on the governor weights and springs.
