thank you for the suggestions, but this is not the very early type, but the more standard later version with the motor bolted to the bottom of the motor board, which is attached by hinge to the case.
removing the back bracket offers a slight view, but it's too small to really access anything.

Brian, That probably has an extension on the crank. Remove the screws on the motorboard and you will be able lift the top enough to get a vice-grip on the small piece of the crank extension---then just unscrew the crank. If this works---then I might of owned that machine, got rid of it sometime ago. Let me know, curious to hear if it is.
