Missing Diamond Disc labels

Post by Edisonh19 »

Hi everyone...
just wondering how you all deal with missing labels on your Diamond Disc records. I have about 8 or 10 records with missing labels. Has anyone come up with a good solution to replacing the labels? Many of mine have obviously been missing for many years as the previous owners have written on the manila colored under-label. I have considered scanning one of my nicer labels and using photoshop to create labels for them using stock fonts. Any thoughts or ideas? Other suggestions? I know that I could obviously just continue doing what was done in the past, write on the remaining paper.. but I wanted a nicer looking solution.

The Charles Gregory 4-book series, Edison Diamond Disc Record Labels & Discography that are being offered in the Yankee Trader section by the Antique Phonograph Society might just be your best option.

The listing can be seen here: http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... =9&t=25223.

A photo of the books in spiral bound edition can be seen on pg. 3 of George's post here: http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... 17#p150317

I have tried to use Mr. Gregory's books to replace missing or damaged labels on my Diamond Disc records. While the books are an excellent source of information on Diamond Disc records and artists, the labels pictured in his books (in my experience) aren't exactly the same size as the originals, so when you photocopy them they don't fit the space on the record very well. In addition, for the so-called "red star" labels, his books only reproduced them in black and white, so you lose the red coloration. If others have had a different experience, please let us know how you went about the process.

Thanks.

At the ladt Wayne show there was someone selling blank adhesive DD labels. They also offered custom printed labels for any DD record you wanted. I will have to check if I still have their info. Not sure about the red star though.

In regards to using the books, you could scan the label into your computer, change the star to red and then print in whatever size you need. May take bit bit finicking first, but should work. The above service may be less hassle, because they pretty much have done that work for you.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I'll have to look into those books when they become available for shipping. I am unable to attend the show at Wayne. New job, family stuff.

For now, I may try scanning one of my nicer DD labels and try playing with it. I think a font like copperplate might approximate the appearance of the title font I see on some of the labels... as for the artist info, I guess I'll have to fiddle with it and see what I can come up with.

Another alternative might be to ask forum members to make copies you need from records they have. Maybe do some swapping back and forth for missing labels? Just a thought, rather than trying to reinvent the wheel.

I found it very easy to find a photo of the actual missing label on the web and once resized for printing it looks fine. If you can't find a photo of the missing label, you will need Photoshop skills to make your own. Good luck replacing yours. :D

I like it! That's a great idea. Your solution is much simpler than spending hours editing on Photoshop. Editing, editing, re-editing... to get them to meet my standards. I'm pretty picky about my records, but I tend to be more lenient with the Edisons. They don't show up as often around here. Generally, missing or heavily damaged labels keep me from buying a disc unless it's a really great song. But if you pass up an awesome jazz number on Edison, it might be a really long time before you see it again!
