Phono desk, Cahokia, IL Craigslist

Post by winsleydale »

I contacted the seller, they said that the $29 price tag is NOT a typo.

If anybody was willing and able to pick this up for me and bring it to Union, that'd be great. If not, I hope one of us gets it and can shed some light on what it actually is.

EDIT: Upon consideration, I don't really need this, so disregard further solicitations for somebody to transport the desk to Union.

I'm wondering if that is not a Victrola desk, but rather a RADIO desk, combining the horn speaker for an early battery radio, space for batteries, and room for the receiver. I don't see any photo evidence of a turntable ever installed.

Maybe so. I had been wondering about the hardware, as well, but for thirty bucks I wasn't too concerned. Heck, even if it was just a normal secretary desk, thirty bucks is a great price.

That is a Red Lion desk which is designed to hold an Atwater Kent radio, either a Model 20 or a Mkdel 35. These cabinets sold fairly well in their day, for they were attractive and useful desks as well as radio cabinets. They are seldom found with the speaker horn intact. If the set has the original Atwater Kent loudspeaker driver, well the driver is worth about $50.00!

This is a very good value. If you buy it I can fix you up with the correct radio very cheaply, free if you ap want to do all of the repair...

That would be fantastic, but I can't go that far to pick it up. If anybody is coming to Union from that area and they can bring it to me, however, I will pay them...

If the seller can get it to Peoria or, better yet, Galesburg, IL, I can get it to Union at no charge. The seller would have until June 7th or so to get it there. Suggest they leave it with a friend or relative. Jerry Blais

OH, and by the way, if one ever wants to get in to radio, the AK 20, 30 and 35, all sets which fit this cabinet, mare the perfect starter units. Simple, straightforward in design, good performers, easy to understand, great parts availability, lots of information about restoration and operation available on the Internet, and they are common enough so that they are really only worth the price of the tubes which they contain.
