A very nice example, which unhappily shows evidence of refinishing. Notice that the decal area under the lid is not pictured, but the insides of the record storage compartment gives it away. Too bad, as the original finish looks good, at least what we can see of it.

If that is refinished, it's one of the best jobs I've ever seen. I agree that it would be nice to see the decal. If the original decal was worked around, it's usually obvious and a good clue. The wood in the record storage area is not oak and I would not expect it to look like the fine exterior oak. The color of the finish deep in the horn area matches the exterior. If I were a serious buyer I would ask about the finish simply because it is not stated in the description. Jerry Blais

I too think it's original. Would love to have it but delivery across the pond could be a bit costly...

Don't think it's refinished either. Wood inside the record storage, as mentioned above is different. It's Poplar. If it were refinished, one would expect the scratches and drink ring on the lid top to be gone. I'd love it, but how to get it to New York??

This machine was not refinished but wiped down with kotton Klenser that is why the inside compartment looks like it does, shineHenry wrote:A very nice example, which unhappily shows evidence of refinishing. My apologies if I made a mistaken assumption; I did not mean to malign anyone or anything. So is it usual for oak cabinets to have veneer of a different species on the (normally unseen) inside surfaces?
I'd still like to see the complete lid underside, though.

Re: FOR SALE OAK VICTROLA ELECTRIC VE-XVI $900
Victor did that on all the machines I've refinished. I've actually never quite understood why they did that on the oak machines under the lid. I have seen one early oak VTLA machines where they used mahogany stained dark on the horn. I have an early queen ann style oak XIV where they used birch around the turntable. Even the XVIII's that I've seen don't use mahogany in the turntable area. Must have been a cost saving measure. It probably looked just fine when it was new, but it has faded differently over the years.

There is no need for an apology. $900 is a lot of money for almost any Victrola and even if mildly interested one needs to look with a critical eye. That's all any of us were doing, Any yes, I would like to see the decal as well. Jerry BlaisMy apologies if I made a mistaken assumption; I did not mean to malign anyone or anything.
