VE 9-55 with Victor Radio or with horn like VE 10-50?

Post by Victrola-Monkey »

I ended up being the only bidder for the VE 9-55 cabinet in Ojai CA that had been pointed out in the TMF Ebay area and I had been watching for the last 2 years. I'll pick it up in August when I go to CAPS. My intentions are to put the changer side back to original and install the RE-45 front cabinet parts into the right side along with the Victor Radio and Amp. Now I'm considering putting the VE 10-50 horn in instead. I have the components to do either.

Which modification is more desirable to you, than the current configuration of this VE 9-55?

My instinct is always keeping it as original as possible. I just had to comment on how beautiful the machine is. The old radios have great interest to me, but I could never find anyone who could repair mine. Congratulations on purchasing a such a fine machine and good luck with the restoration efforts.

I really like the RE-45 option. The electric phonographs of that time had some really good sound, and I've always really enjoyed the sound of a horseshoe magnet pickup!

Not to mention it would be closer looking (and functioning) to the original machine.

Unless you have ALL the original parts from a junk 9-55, I'd just put the original changer back in and leave the later radio. One of my many 9-55's came with a mid 30's RCA radio and 12" speaker installed and it was a huge improvement in sound quality. In fact the friend that eventually bought it uses it as his daily listener, instead of any of his all original 9-55's.
