Playerphone operation question

I have a Playerphone Talking Machine that I picked up last weekend. It is in wonderful condition and plays records very well. My question is... What is the handle on the right side near the top of cabinet for? It slides in and out , but I have no idea what it is for.

Volume control- it should operate a slide that closes off the horn throat.

Well Thank You very much , I will play with it tonite and see how much of difference it makes
