spear tip needles

I have a couple dozen of these spear tip needles - should they be aligned so that the wide side of the needle is tangent to the record groove?

I've read that they enhance the lower frequencies

Supposedly you could turn them to be aligned with the groove to achieve a softer tone. When you turn them to be in a right angle to the groove they are supposed to be stiffer and thus louder. I have not heard a big difference and think it is more of a sales gimmick.
