Hi,
Mildew is easy to clean of a hard dark surface not so easy with regard to white fabric. The record was clean when it arrived but mildew like any mold eats or consumes the material it grows on. This consuming was the result of the microscopic pitting the mildew consumed the celluloid resulting in the fine pitting. The metal diaphragm of the O likely responded better to the high frequency signal due to the fine pitting than the rice paper cork probably dew to damping of the mass and damping qualities of the cork and the material used to hold the silk thread. This is my interpretation of how to explain the mechanics-dynamics of how the diaphragms responses resulted in amplifying vs muting the hiss dew to the fine pitting. The diamond stylus may also burnish or smooth the fine pitting over time so that the sound using the O may change. There may be others that might have better interpretations of what is occurring.
My Best to all,
Allen
p.s. I still wonder if this fine pitting might damage the softer stylus of the O?
