the one that got away.............

Post by 78recordpicker »

A few weeks ago I arrived at an estate sale to see a antique floor model phonograph being loaded into a pick up. It had a tarp over it but just from the small amount of wood exposed and leg style it seems like a 1920s Victrola. So I go in and ask the estate seller if he knew what the make and model was. I probably shouldn't have asked, as he noted Victrola, VV-107, all original, gold plating shining. I pushed my suffering even further to ask what the sale price of this rare model was, the one I could have put if I showed up 5 minutes sooner - 400.00.
Seems like a great buy. I've only been able to find two sales on the internet, with going prices of about 850 and 1000. I didn't ask the seller if it was electric, as only 14 were made and could only guess at what one of those would sell for.

Forgot my questions!
1. Was this a great buy, considering the description given by the estate seller as accurate?
2. are there any rough rules to estimate the number of surviving examples of 1920s Victrolas? 10%? Would that make this one i missed one of 100 or less extant?
