New Glass Diaphragms (origin of Edison Diaphragms)

Post by edisonphonoworks »

where did Edison come up with the idea for his recording/ reproducing diaphragms (for the regular size reproducers, such as the perfected, standard speaker, automatic, model B (not diamond B),Model C,H,K, what did he base the diameter of the diaphragm on??? Large, round, microscope slide cover slips!!!!!! It even mentions it in the 1889 repair manual for the spectacle recorder/reproducer. The size is 33mm 1.299". Now I have 200 of them in stock, but those are for my work, should be a lifetime supply of glass diaphragms. They vary from .005-.008 in thickness, (most are .007,.0075,.008" thick that I have just checked.)Below is where I got mine and they just arrived, and I checked them. They come in a stack, in plastic and tissue paper, none were broken, all arrived safe, they were made in china, cost twenty and a half cents each with shipping.

33mm coverslips, this is where Edison got the Idea for the size of his recording and reproducing diaphragms, something already available.

33mm coverslip .007 thick fits in an early recorder (or a late one for better sound.)

Will these work in the 2 minute recorders for the Home and Standard?

Normally those later recorders came with a .002 inch
thick mica diaphragm.

If these glass cover slips will fit ok, then it would be
a good experiment to try one in a later style recorder
to see how it works.

Try it and see.

How do you go about piercing the center hole?

On the glass diaphragms that I've seen, there's no center hole. The whatchamacallit is glued directly to the center. (Hmph - I used to know what it was called!)

I have seen it called a crosshead, and also an eyelet.

Chuck I just checked my Edison Spring Motor manual an on the back page it has a breakdown of the reproducer and the name of the part is listed as CROSS--HEAD so you are correct.
