I just listed a clean brass Orthophonic on Ebay. Feel welcome to make an offer. It would be nice to see this go to a forum member in need of a brass reproducer.
eBay Item #172209633101

Wow. Talk about ambition.
I'm glad I paid much less than that for mine!

Hmmm, I found mine in the garbage, unused. I picked up a Victrola cabinet, painted white and missing a door because I couldn't stand see it go in a landfill. I found the reproducer inside, behind the record rack. It would have never been used on the Victrola XVI that the cabinet was from, which is probably why it was in perfect, seemingly unused condition.long_island_phono wrote:It's a best offer listingbrianu wrote:$711???I really don't expect someone to pay 711, it's really just a point for a collector to make an offer. I recently sold another brass orthophonic that was missing the gold finish but had the brass polished. Another collector made an offer and ended up buying it for 530. It's not like good orthophonics grow on trees

...And the mayor of our village found one in his basement in 2007, and he gave it to me. But what does any of this have to do with the market value of a brass Orthophonic sound box?
I enjoy stories of lucky finds/gifts as much as the next guy, but the implication that brass Orthos are easy/cheap to find would not be accurate. There's a reason they sell for a lot on eBay. Maybe not $711, but the seller has made it clear that it's merely an arbitrary number and that he's open to offers.
I'm sure we don't want to discourage offerings of high-dollar items here, do we?

I found mine in an orchard, growing on a very special tree. The owner of the land saw the tree as a nuisance and so paid me $711 to strip all the reproducers off it and dig the thing up.
It's in my back yard now. The little ortho-buds are nowhere near ripe yet, but I look forward to the fall harvest, which falls on November 2 each year.

George,
It's just a story, not a condemnation of current pricing. No implied message beyond that. If I meant any different, that's what I would have said. It was inspired by his comment, "It's not like good orthophonics grow on trees".
