First, do your homework before visiting DC. You'll find out quickly enough that "The Smithsonian" is actually something like *15* museums, each of which could easily take up a full day of your time. Prioritization is a must.
DC has an excellent "tourist trolley" - pay one price and get on an off at virtually all the major sites all day long. Highly recommended for a first time visitor.
For Boston, research the Freedom Trail, and again, prioritize. Harbor cruises are also fun. Consider day trips to Providence RI, Newport RI, Cape Cod, etc. The "Duck Boat" tours are also fun and a great way to see the city for the first time.

If you're already traveling between Washington DC and Boston you should plan a stop in the Johnson Victrola Museum in Dover, Delaware. They are focused on the Victor Talking Machine Co. and its founder Eldridge R Johnson. Lots of interesting Victor and Victrola machines on display. Let me know if you're interested in meeting there and I'll see if my work schedule allows. My own collection is much less extensive and exciting, but you are welcome to see that as well.
