Pateint Plate Brads

Post by ambrola »

I have 2 machines, Edison model A's, that needs the 2 pins or brads that holds the Patient plates on. Does anyone know where to get them? The ones I have are to big? I have these that Martin so kindly sent me but they are too big also? They are for this machine. Has any of you guys ran into this problem before?

Ronnie -

The brads I sent you are from McMaster-Carr. Item # 97936A161. They are listed as "Brass Decorative Finishing Nail" 14 gauge, ½". (The next under size they have has way too small a head - I bought some of those, too.) I have a late bedplate that they will fit, but I suspect that the original brads were a slightly smaller gauge.

I assume you already cleaned the crud out of the holes with a twist drill? I'm not suggesting making the hole larger, but any dirt or rust will prevent it going in. If it comes down to it, you may want to file down the shafts of the brads you have to make it fit. If anybody has a source of the exact ones, I'd love to know as well.

Hi Jerry.
Thanks for the link. I had already seen that. Do you happen to know which size, besides the one I got, would be the right one? Thanks for your help!

Martin,

Use the shank of a drill bit as your gauge. The catalog cut in the link gives the shank diameters of the nails.

Jerry,
What I'm getting at is that as far as I can tell there are no exact duplicates. Either the shank will fit but the head will be too small (and won't hold the plate), or the head will be right but the shank will be a might too big. What I'm thinking is that the factory ones were a size just between. However, maybe I'm missing something and somebody has actually ordered an exact match. If that's the case, I'd like to know what the actual catalog number was, so I can order it as well. Have a great Memorial day and don't overcrank your machine!

I was talking with Sitko the other night, and he said the early machines used a small size that you have to take from another machine. Luckily, I found 4, but they may be hard to find.
