Thanks for bringing this topic up. Also, this is the the anniversary of the Battle of Midway. That Naval battle turned the tide of the Pacific Theater.

Somehow, someone wants us to forget... Google marks all kinds of inane holidays, etc. but "forgot" to mention D-Day and chose to mark June 6th as "National Day of Sweden"... how pathetic. Apparently it's not politically correct to remember important days in US history.

How true and it seems the "some" that you speak of are the same ones who have benefited the most because there are men and women willing to sacrifice everything so we can have the freedoms we do. We should never forget. Jan

Last month, my wife and I were on Utah Beach, what is left of the German gun emplacements above the beaches, and the American cemetery above Utah beach in Normandy, France. It was a very moving experience. I could not even imagine what it must have been like for those brave men. Here is Utah beach today, and the American cemetery.

Thanks for posting those shots, Bill. Someday I plan to visit all 5 invasion beaches. (Being a Yank, I'm particularly interested in Utah and Omaha.)

In Stephen Ambrose's books, he sometimes noted that the French still (in the 1990s and early 2000s) express gratitude for the sacrifices made in Normandy and throughout their country in 1944/45. Modern American society should emulate that sentiment.

My wife's old boss was a paratrooper that day.
We talked, but he would never speak of it.
He was a tough old guy. At 80 beat a would-be mugger with a box of chocolates and tossed his hot coffee on him, he knocked him to the ground and told the guy to run before he kills him.
