Help with a Columbia G-2

Post by 78monarch »

Is there anyone who can help me with information about opening the Spring Barrel. It is only the Spring Barrel that is marked red.

If memory serves, these are the "cookie tin" variety. It should come off the same way as the other two. Sometimes they can really be a bear to open. Patiently tap all around the sides of the "lid," but this tends to end up marring the barrel, eventually. If you can unhook the gear/arbor from the inner part of the spring and remove it, you can go through the hole from the backside to tap the "lid" loose from the inside of the barrel. This is often the only way to open a barrel of this type.

A comprehensive explanation of how the spring barrels of the various makes should be opened is where even the most regarded gramophones' book fall short.

Thank you very much for this self-explaining picture, will try to memorize it and keep it in mind.
