WWII Phonograph Picture - What Model Is It?

Post by fourforty »

Was this specifically a G.I. phonograph, or something else? I don't see a name on it. What brand is it?

Looks like a home brew machine..maybe cobbled up. The lid hinge looks pretty beat up.

The 12 inch turntable suggests that the components started life in a more expensive cabinet.

Presumably the horn emerges at the front, but it is impossible to see it unless the picture can be enhanced.

What it is? Can't be sure for this photo. Homemade? I doubt it.

I agree, not a "gerry-rigged" job, speaking of which, perhaps this photo was taken in Europe somewhere towards the end of the war in Europe. Plenty of items were confiscated from houses. I suspect an European machine, a portable, or what passed as a portable back in the day (is a VV-50 really portable?--well, yes, as long as you are willing to lug it around).

To me it is a piece of a cabinet, without the lower end that would contain the internal horn. The components like the break and speed control look German or Swiss.

This picture has an overall weird look. It looks like a photomontage to me. The guy on the left projects the shadow of his head on the top board and record, but then the lid has shadows in its right corner. Also the overall way in which the gramophone stands on the barrel doesn't look quite right to me.

Good observations! It looks like Photoshop may have struck again.

Not to mention the 'uniform' and haircut of the guy at the left. Looks like a 50s juvenile delinquent, not a WWII solider.

Well, not really. Buzz cuts were not de rigueur in those days after boot camp, especially under battlefield conditions.
