So according to the photo source, the G.I.s were on their way to Utah Beach in France (famous for D-Day on June 6, 1944). Photo was thus probably taken in England before the invasion of France. Consensus so far leans towards European components for this phonograph.

Well, now the whole image makes more sense, and it actually looks as if there is some kind of horn mouth on the front of the gramophone. Still, there's something elusive in the shadows. All of the people and objects in the picture have shadows as if the sun was in the top-left corner of the image, except for the gramophone which has a very marked shadow on the right side of the lid that looks projected by a sun on the right side of the image. Adding to the mistery, this shadow looks unusually long and deep, while if you carefully look at the lid on the opposite side you will see that the lid is indeed very shallow, I would say no more than an inch or so.

Very weird if you ask me. But in any case I was not thinking to a photoshop contemporary mockup, but to a classic "vintage" photomontage.

The man by the phonograph is casting a shadow on the record that is in the same direction as everyone else's shadow. You can see the sun on the record by the reproducer.

Is it a possible RCA, or Silver tone or another company that made some unmarked phonographs for the troops and did not mark them ??? Enjoyment items were in short supply during the war as most manufacturing went to the war effort. It seems to me that this is on a ship and that is a sailor getting ready to change the record when it ends. The shadows on the sailor seem to match the shadows on the turntable platter and speed adjuster. Sometimes different army's would share equipment. Entertainment was hard to come by on the front. We used to share our films out at sea to different ships. Sorry I did not see the photo post before I posted this Tom B

Sure, agree. And how do you explain the shadow of the lid going exactly the opposite direction?
