Just aquired VV 4-40

Just picked this up, needs cleaning and some other work and a tone-arm mount? I was hoping someone might be able to direct me to a person or shop where I might acquire one. Really anxious to hear it play. Seems to be all complete aside from the broken mount. Thanks for any help I might get.

Really anxious to hear it play.

With a little care, you can hear it play now.

First, take out that needle and put in a fresh one. Needles should only be used once and that one looks like it's going on 100. Then, after you start up the motor, support the back of the tonearm by putting one finger under the bend at the back. Put the needle down and enjoy, keeping your finger relatively still.

I wouldn't do this a lot, but just for a quick demonstration, you should be fine.

Looks like the bottom feet are sawn off - at least compared to my 4-40 which otherwise looks identical.

Some of the 4-40's are electric motor.

The reproducer may not sound it's best. Probably want a rebuild at some point.

Overall, the tone quality is similar to that of the Credenza, with the exception of the very low notes. As with all Orthophonic models in as-found condition, the sound box will likely need an overhaul as noted, and the horn should be checked to make sure there are no separations or seam gaps.

The horn, itself, is modeled on that of the Credenza, in that it has a horizontal "heart" encasing four tapered conduits, that reunite at the mouth.

I've been very pleased with mine, but at some point, will probably replace it with one of the 8-series models. I only have room in my apartment for one floor-model Victrola.

Thanks for the input- I will try playing something on it tonight holding the tone arm as suggested. I have plenty of new needles I bought for my VV-XVII. And yes, the bottoms of the legs were cut, forgot to mention that. I am looking for a good pic of the bottoms of the feet if anyone has some so I can try to replicate. Thanks for the help!

Much appreciated! I now have it apart and cleaning it. I found this item rattling around in the bottom which appears to be a cutter of some sort. Any ideas?
