Be very careful using Goof Off. It will remove permanent marker and paint, so it will most likely remove the black paint on the ID tag if it contacts it. Goo Gone is not quite as strong as Goof Off, but may to the same thing. Ammonia and a soft bristle tooth brush took the tape residue off the last tone arm I had that had the residue. Thankfully, the ID tag did not have it on there.

Naphtha (Ronsonol lighter fluid, Coleman liquid fuel) will remove tape residue, and it's also a very effective degreaser. Test it on gold first, but my hunch is that it'll be OK. Caution: highly flammable!!
