HMV Cabinet Gramophone

Post by Bern S »

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this forum and would like to share my HMV 194.

Anyone know where I can order the original/similar grill cloth online?

I want to fix it up as it is currently in storage.

Welcome to the forum! Your HMV looks fantastic. As for the grill cloth, it's hard to find a phonograph as old as yours with the grill cloth in such good condition. It really is beautiful and in original condition which is worth a great deal to collectors. Accept the minor flaws in the cloth for what they are. It's only original once.

Is that sticky clear tape wrapped around the tonearm and contacting with the lacquer finish? If so, be very careful removing it. I'm wondering if you should use something like "Goo Gone" to remove it so it won't pull up the gold finish from the metal, or damage the lacquer.

Thank you for the warm welcome.

I live in Switzerland and brought this from Australia with my other collectables in 2008.

Perhaps an alternative exists in Switzerland/Europe to remove Scotch tape without damaging the lacquer on wood and tonearm?I'll leave tape for now until I find solution. I only brought it out of storage today and happy it's still in one piece.

I'll look at it again tomorrow. Thank you for all your comments.

Beautiful machine! You're fortunate to own it. It should clean up nicely, and sound terrific with TLC to sound box, horn, and cabinet. As for removing the tape, the question was recently addressed in this thread: http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... 5&start=10. Naphtha will almost certainly dissolve the tape adhesive, but, as others have cautioned, be careful around the gold plating and the cabinet finish. The usual advice about testing first on an inconspicuous area holds here as well. Let us know how it turns out.

I cleaned it up as best I could.Thank you for the advice. The tape came off reasonably easy with a few earbuds and lighter fluid. Happy with result.

Didnt know there were so few 194's out there. It's been locked away in storage for so long it deserves to be appreciated. will post some YouTube videos this weekend. Gotta find that key.
