FREE to a young collector: VV-XIV, Taper Tubes, Motors, more

Post by Cody K »

I'm packing to move, and I'd like to pass on a whole pile of phonograph-related stuff to a young collector who'll put it all to good use. Included is a VV-XIV (serial 254961, 1920) that includes all parts, though I removed the turntable and motor some time ago to replace a couple of the springs and never finished the job. Everything EXCEPT the soundbox is there to put it back together and revive a good machine. I think there's a No. 2 soundbox floating around here somewhere, and if I find it in time, I'll include that too. The machine's finish is dry but decent, and has some rubbing on the corners, but with a little work and Old English/Howard's I'm sure it would shine again. I had planned to restore this machine and give it to my friends next door, but as time grew short, I gave them my favorite XVI instead, so now I have neither the time or motivation to finish.

Also included:

- Four or five Victor taper tubes (all fat style, if I remember correctly)
- A few Victor turntables of nineteen-teens vintage
- An Edison C-150 motor, working when I salvaged it from a machine that was too far gone to save
- Edison mute ball from the C-150, and the wood surround pieces, crank, etc.
- Three or four Victor motors, two and four spring styles
- A bunch of random pre-1930 records, a couple of binders

...and I'm sure there'll be more as I continue to sort through the stuff in that room.

All you need to do is make an appointment and show up with someone to help you get it all to your vehicle from the second floor. I'd be happy to pass all this on to someone who'll use it.

Just a couple minutes off Rt. 95 in Providence. Please reply with "PM sent", so I'll know to look for your message.

This is a great idea and generous offer. Hopefully a young collector will contact you.

I commend you for doing this. I hope someone here can refer a young friend or relative about this offer and mentor him or her in restoring the VV-XIV.

Thanks, gentlemen. I figure all these things have survived nearly a hundred years, so I'd like them to go to someone who's actively involved in helping phonographs last another hundred. Adding these parts to the lot:

- A Garrard "Junior" motor from a portable, along with its crank and blue-velvet turntable. I believe this motor is in working condition.

- Restorable grilles from an unknown machine (Pathé, I think) and the Edison C-150. Both Mahogany.

- The edge moldings from a mahogany Credenza lid, and the inner panel of the lid. Top of the lid is in poor condition and may not be reusable, but the inside is still good, with the decal in excellent shape. Moldings are fine. I'd hate to discard these; they may come in useful for someone at a future time, and as we all know, they're not making these things anymore.

All right, all right, FREE to ANY collector, you don't have to be young anymore. These things are definitely not coming with me when I move, and I'd rather not leave them on the curb in front of the house before I go. The XIV would probably end up turned into a bar or something, and most likely the metal parts would be snatched up and sold for scrap. Just contact me and come get it all -- please leave a message in the thread saying "PM sent", because I don't always sign in, and if I don't I might not see your message soon.

C'mon, somebody must be able to use this stuff!
