Edison model "A" Home with 2/4 mins adapter?

Post by Marco Gilardetti »

It's been a while since I began seeking, as the title says, for an Edison Home phonograph with "banner" decal, and I would like it to have the 2/4 mins adapter.

I believe that the 2/4 mins adapter was sold by Edison also as a "retrofit" for older machines, so somehow I figured that there must be out there some surviving "banner decal" Home phonographs adapted back then for 2/4 mins cylinders.

However, it's been such a long time since I began searching for one of those, that I am now wondering if it really is so. I've seen all kinds of Edison Phonagraphs, Home(s) included, able to play 2 and 4 mins. cylinders, and I think all kinds of "Home" models (B, C, D...) EXCEPT a type "A" ("banner" decal) Home model WITH a 2/4 mins adapter. And now that I think about it, I don't really know if the 2/4 mins adapter could be mounted also on early Home machines.

Am I perhaps looking for a match of features that never existed? :?

I have a suitcase Home with a 2/4 gearing upgrade. If I recall it correctly, my gearing itself was once made for the B, works like a charm.

Marco,
If you are buying from the U.S., you'll see the Banner Model A Home with the 2/4 minute attachment fairly frequently. Most (if not all) will have the lever type speed shift. Good luck on your quest!

I know from personal experience that the same adapter, with selector lever, will fit the suitcase, model A and model B Homes. I don't know about the model C and I'm pretty sure the adapters for the model D and up are different. Check Frow for details.

I'm not sure which got to the Edison dealers quicker, the adaptors to retrofit two minute machines or the new D series 2&4 minute machines. Jerry Blais

Thanks to everyone for answering. Yes, I am also searching for it in the States, but I wouldn't say that a "banner decal" with 2/4 mins adapter is found fairly frequently... Perhaps just my bad luck. Will continue to look around! 8-)

Marco,
Perhaps I did overstate that the Banner Home model A is found fairly frequently. I've been keeping a list on Homes on a very casual basis. Of the Home model As with the New style Banner cases that I've bothered to record over the last 8 years, I've only noted 28. That's out of 152 to date. It just feels like I'm always having to take a second look at any given machine to add in the note "2&4 minute attachment". They are out there. I'm kind of kicking myself for selling the one I had years ago. Good luck!
Regards,
Martin

Yes, my model A has a combination attachment: I suspect that a good number of unmodified machines may have come from original owners who might have shifted to discs...
