It looks like it worked. He seems to be distracted!

Are you sure it's Billy Murray? From the look on her face it's probably Hawaiian Music!!!  Still a great picture. It looks the the phonograph is European.

The patient's eyes seem a bit surprised by the choice of music being played.

Even if the photograph was posed, to me the patient's eyes reflect sheer terror. There was no such thing as painless dentistry back then, and even today no-one looks forward to visiting the dentist.

Yes, the gramophone appears European, as the "Peacock Feather" pattern horn is typical of Swiss/German machines.

I think James nailed the music... The terrified look is caused by the "dentist" using Model T tools and no anesthesia

If my dentist had a phonograph or gramophone or anything like it I'd go there no doubt. Funny photo.

I'd settle for anything that would drown out the chatty lady that cleans my teeth!

Lady: "sir, do your gums bleed like this all the time?"
Me: "Only when you're stabbing them with that tool!"

Me: "Doc, if dental x-rays are so safe, why do you always leave the room?"
