Craigslist Sacramento -- HMV 163 -$250

Post by OrthoFan »

I initially spotted this a few days ago, and noticed, today, that the seller has cut the price in half -- http://sacramento.craigslist.org/clt/5747917054.html

I'd go for it, myself, if I had a way to get to Sacramento. The only issues I see are the replacement grill cloth and perhaps the sound box which does not look like a 5 or 5a.

The 163, I believe, has a six foot folded horn--an all metal version of the Credenza horn.

This is a truly great machine (or at least it would be with the 5A reproducer).

Even with the wrong soundbox and (possibly) winding handle it seems cheap. Good original examples usually make £500/£700 in the UK depending on condition, and the correct HMV 5a soundbox should not be hard to find from a UK seller. Alternatively a Victrola Orthophonic soundbox might fit.

Firstly, the seller is only copying information from the vintage ad and not giving the full story of the machine itself.
We know that the reproducer is wrong. So the arm or the Exhibition reproducer has been modified to make it fit.
The grille cloth is speaker fabric from the 1970s and there appears to be something amiss with the speed regulator: has the post and knob been snapped off?
All the nickel is in bad condition and a good 5A reproducer will easily cost $100 as they are quickly becoming popular.

Take $100 off the asking price and we have a deal. Great machine but too many flaws for the asking price.

Yes, the adjusting knob and the perspex window of the automatic speed indicator are missing. It may have been disconnected.
The winding handle is definitely wrong. It should be a bronzed finish and have a smooth bend at each right angle.
The motor board screws are missing.

All this leads me to suspect that the machine may have been re-motored.

The good news is that the nickel plating will probably polish up well............. :)
