Spent the weekend with Phonograph Collector Russel Knaack. At Homer Harvest Days. We played and displayed our talking machines. We recorded children saying there name and something they like with the Edison studio recorder. We then played back the recording they made, and recorded it on Sony Digital recorder, and then emailed each parent the cylinder recording of the child's voice. Also recorded Abe Lincoln, and recorded two selections by the bluegrass band Miles Over Mountains. See it is nice to enjoy your own collection, but it is better to share it with others. Now more than ever it still amazes people. In this video we have Abe Lincoln recording the Gettysburg Address. Also is a list on the website of other activities. Now I don't know why it says 2015, it is 2016 Homer Harvest Days September 10th and 11th.
I will be changing and updating a few things this fall on the recording phonograph. A new set of mainsprings, a solid steel lower pulley , a solid mandrel of brass and a larger, heavier pulley. I also will be machining a precision, air tight trunnion The barrel will have two conical bushings, and the inner barrel solid, except for a tapered hole inside, that goes from where the recorder hooks to the barrel, and I am also thinking a phasing plug in the tube to the recorder. I also will be making a pattern to cast a new trunnion arm in aluminum, with roller bearings on the straight edge. I hope these will improve performance. I also hope to make a pattern to make more recorder bodies in aluminum, they will be copies of the original, and hopefully retire it to be a display piece. I would like to have 5-10 studio recording heads,(the copies will have slight improved modifications.) equipped with diaphragms from .005-.0085 glass, some stepped mica and some .002 mica, titanium and aluminum dome diaphragms and a few other variations. I am thinking instead of being flat, making a few with retaining rings and U shaped channels to accept the gaskets of various rubbers, silicone, sorbothane and the material similar to printers ink. I am posting these as kind of a public caveat, so that someone else does not claim the same things, and that this thought is documented.
