Cleaning Up a Tooled Leather Credenza

Post by gemering »

Anyone here have experience with cleaning up an "as found" Credenza with tooled leather front?
I'm wondering if the one pictured is a "diamond in the rough."
The wood cabinet does not look bad.

All comments greatly appreciated and taken under advisement.

Sorry for the super small pictures.
Not sure why they attached the way that they did.
I will try to fix them.

Based on the thread above that 52809 posted, looks like the one I pictured would clean up well.

Absolutely! The decorations on the leather are covered in shellac, which darkens with age and dirt. Its just like cleaning a shellac finish on a cabinet, and I use GOOP or Gojo to do it. Takes a few applications, and you might have to work it in with a brush, but most of the dirt should come up. When wiping the dirty GOOP off, be very gentle at first to make sure you don't accidentally scrub down to the paint.
