Info about a Sono-phonic

Post by Major_Dundee »

Hi all,
I'm a newbie to your boards. I have owned a Victor XIV for about 2 years and recently purchased an Edison C-19 a couple of months ago, so I guess I'm hooked  First off, thanks for all the valuable information you guys provide. I have learned alot just by reading all the posts that you all have put here. My wife's family has Sono-phonic phonograph from Quebec of which I have been able to find very little information about. I do know that it was a catalogue company in Quebec that probably sold these, because it has P. T. Legare Limitee printed on the label. It probably has more sentimental value than monetary, but it is in nice shape and if anyone has any info on these or where I may be able to find out, let me know. Thanks!

I wish I had some real information for you but not being from Canada I don't. However just from looking at it its a very nice wood they used in the cabinet and with the type of reproducer it uses and a name with sonic on the end, it would seem to be a transitional machine perhaps they outfitted to play electrical records in the mid 20's? Normally the cabinet style would denote a acoustic machine, but may not in this case?

Take a look at the Canadian Antique Phonograph Society webpage. http://www.capsnews.org/

They had a series on Canadian phonographs so there may be something there. I can't remember if your machine was mentioned but have a look and maybe you'll find something.

Welcome to the board Major_Dundee.

Unfortunately, I do not have any information to add other than I agree that it is quite an attractive piece. I have not heard of this brand, I could imagine that it may be a house brand such as Silvertone was the house brand of Sears.

If you do learn more about it from outside this forum, please post what you have learned, as many of us would like to hear.

And yes, One machine is a curiosity, two machines is interested, 3 machines is a hooked collector! :)
Why do we need signatures when we are on a first avatar basis?

I'd just like to add that your Sono-phonic appears to be in a walnut cabinet. That alone puts it a notch above many other generic-hardware machines.

P T Legare Lte sold farm equipment in Quebec but in the twenties they had a fling with the radio business , so it seems they tried the phonograph too. The sound box looks like the " Phonic" reproducer sold by Honest Quaker/Everbody's in Philadelphia. They seemed to supply parts for a lot of the smaller manufacturers in the 20's, but I can't be sure if this particular one is in fact from them , but it looks very similar.
