Raised Edge Gramophone - My First!

Just got a nice group of 3 early GRAMOPHONE records, 1 each GRAMOPHONE MONARCH (DS, 12"), GRAMOPHONE CONCERT (SS, 10"), and DISQUE POUR GRAMOPHONE (SS, 10"). The reverse of the 2 single sided records have the lovely embossed Angel trade mark and they are both stamped(?) REPRODUCED IN HANOVER. The GRAMOPHONE MONARCH and DISQUE POUR GRAMOPHONE each have a significant raised rim, something I have not seen before. Pretty neat!

The following information may help you to date your finds :

Unsure whether the gramophone sales boom would last, on 10 December 1900 The Gramophone Company changed it's name to The Gramophone and Typewriter Ltd, in order to diversify the business by marketing the Lambert typewriter.

The typewriter was not a success, and on 18 November 1907 the company name reverted to The Gramophone Company Ltd.

In July 1908 commercial record pressing commenced at the company's new factory at Hayes, Middlesex. Records had previously been pressed at the Hanover plant set up by Joseph Berliner in 1898.

The Rousselière is the most interesting find there : the opera was premiered in 1901, and Rousselière created the role which he sings on this disc, which was recorded in 1903.

Both Régis discs date from the same session in 1908. There's a little biographical information about the singer here http://forgottenoperasingers.blogspot.c ... tenor.html.

They all sound very good.

The Sansone E Dalila was the worst of the records. I could tell it was a chorus, but couldn't really tell what was being sung. I was fortunate to be able to coax a fair sound from it.

Until February/March 1909 in the UK and most of Europe. HMV were remarkably slow to put Nipper on their record labels, and the words "His Master's Voice" were not added until December 1910.

That was not the end of the Recording Angel trademark. In May 1963 EMI re-introduced it on a "deluxe" classical LP label.

I've always thought that the "Recording Angel" was a beautiful trademark, especially when colored ,like in this Russian disc.
