How tight should Tension Screws be?

Post by Benjamin_L »

I just put some new gaskets in my Mandel style 2 reproducer. But I'm having trouble getting the tension screws just right. (I'm constantly tinkering with them.)

So I'm wondering for advice on how tight they should be.

Benjamin,

I've never really seen that style of attachment before. First, it all looks filthy. I'm thinking that fulcrum is probably gummed up pretty good with old oil and dirt. My first piece of advice would be to disassemble it and clean everything really well.

Wondering next if the pins that go under the two straps are a close fit or somewhat smaller in diameter, leading me to believe that each pin should have a rubber sleeve over it. As you're probably noticing, such an arrangement, tightened too tight, will clamp the pins in place and silence the reproducer, while too loose will rattle. Hence my thought of possible rubber sleeves/bushings. I think some disassembly, cleaning and inspection will lead to a solution.

Cleaning it up a bit does sound like some good advise.

This reproducer actually doesn't use anything to separate them. You can see the same style in a different topic.

If there's no place to put a rubber sleeve then I would consider using spring washers under the screw heads. Assuming there's room for them...

Just barely snugging the screws will put tension on the springs and keep a light, constant force against the needle arm pins. This should prevent rattling but still allow movement. In theory...
