Cast Iron Repair Service- Can Anyone Recommend One?

Post by Edisonfan6156 »

Hello. Can anyone recommend a good cast iron repair service? I have a cast iron crank that was damaged in the mail. Cracked just before shaft portion. If possible, I would like to get it repaired like it never happened. I am an long time collector from Maryland, and around these parts it appears that all of the old timers, who were masters at this trade, have gone on to greener pastures or closed shop. Sure could use some help. Thank you.

I've had cast iron brazed before. Most local welders can do that. They, or you, should work up a jig to rigidly hold the pieces in alignment during the process.

I had a local Diesel block repair shop weld up some cast items for me. they weld cast everyday in their engine block repair business and are very good. see if your local diesel block guy will do it

Have you thought of "cast iron stitching". This is not a weld joint. I have seen bedplates repaired by this method and they look great.
Check out in your area to see if there is a shop near you that does this "stitching" process.

I found this article interesting. Maybe one or two of you will as well. It explains why welding cast iron is so hard, etc and discusses various repair techniques such as stitching.
