Unexpected 'Surprise' On Uncle Josh 2 Minute Wax Cylinder

Post by FellowCollector »

I recently made a fairly long drive to purchase and pick up a collection of approximately 350 to 400 mostly 2 minute wax cylinders. Most are in very nicely preserved condition. I have slowly been going through the collection and playing some of them as time permits.

Yesterday I decided to record a few of the cylinders playing on various phonographs in my collection. I posted the videos on my YouTube channel here: http://www.youtube.com/user/MusicBoxBoy

One of the cylinders I found was Uncle Josh And The Bunco Steerers which is not one of the easier to find 2 minute black wax Uncle Josh cylinder titles on Edison. I quickly examined the condition of the cylinder and decided to play it. I was startled shortly after the cylinder began playing and wanted to share it with those of you who care to listen.

For any of you who care to watch, here is the video that I posted a little while ago:

Spoiler Alert Follows: Over the years I have found quite a few well preserved and interesting home recordings but very few were made by owners shaving an original Edison Studio black wax cylinder recording like this. It’s too bad that they shaved Uncle Josh And The Bunco Steerers. Why couldn’t they have picked a boring title to shave and record on? Oh well…

If anyone recognizes the tune that is being played please share it with us. I know that I've heard it in the past. The announcement indicates it but I can't understand it.

Doug

Just a heads up... the intro to this video is way too long. :? Advance to 6:12 to hear the beginning of the record...

Interesting find. The tune appears to be "Stay in Your Own Backyard".

I'm kind of surprised that the Black wax recorded as well as it did.

Most of the subscribers to my channel enjoy the background intros that I provide and I will continue providing the intros as I have been. The few that don't care to watch and listen are welcome to jump forward to the audio portion. Your comment is rude and unnecessary.

Thanks Martin. I knew that I heard it before!

I overwhelmingly like the long introductions by you Doug, and the ones from Mr. Young's videos as well.

I love learning about anything that you share and your thoughts on it as well. It really is interesting and is worth the wait.(I'm still waiting for your video on your Davis corner machine. )

Don't take my comment personally, it wasn't meant to be rude...

Maybe I've been watching too many teaser lead ins on the History Channel...

Just want to add my thoughts here. I enjoy your videos, I am a newbie when it comes to early records and machines and I find them very informative. I subscribe to your channel and always look forward to your next one. Keep up the good work! :D

My friend Arthur Pare had what appeared to be Bob Roberts on a wax Amberol singing "Dat's Harmony" but it was a recording of a band playing a classical piece.Eventually,he did find another copy with the correct recording.edisonplayer
