How do you correctly grease and oil a cheney?

I'm new to this and have acquired a cheneyes talking machine model hepplewhite. It plays great and in excellent shape after I redone the cabinet. I know it must need to be greasedone and oiled but I do not find any videos or answers on how to do this. Can so.eine please help me?!

Basically, all you have to do with the motor, if it is running ok, and the spring is not "bumping" as it unwinds, is to use a thin oil (sewing machine or clock oil are good)on the governor bearings, the leather/felt pad that rides on the governor disc, the top and bottom bearings of the turntable spindle, and any other bearings you can see. Use a medium grade general-purpose grease on any cogs, but not the one mounted on the turntable spindle if it fibre.

Having done such a great job on the cabinet, please may I ask you to do yourself (and us) a favour, and replace that awful bit of lilac curtain material with something more in keeping with this beautiful machine?

That is a very nice machine, I think I had one like it---was stored in a damp garage and when we went to move it (I lifted the legs) and the base with the four legs mounted to it came off. Good luck with it an be prepared to own more phonographs---it gets addicting. Those on here are always ready to help with information, parts, and/or related items, really good people. That machine plays early 78's (78 is the turntable speed), the later 78's (1930's-1940's) were made to pay on later more advanced machines. Enjoy

I'd completely remove the motor and disassemble everything but the springs, clean the rest up with gojo, dry it all, then last regrease with a little wd-forty.

That'd be a little cleaning job that wouldn't take a lot of work and help a lot.

With great respect, WD40 is a moisture repellent, not a lubricant. Actually, it's very effective at removing grease!

To be picky about it, 78 rpm was not the standard speed until about 1930. Earlier records, especially from the acoustic era, will sometimes vary significantly in recording speed.

You're absolutely right, but for beginners it's something easy to start with. It does work great at gleaning grease without putting to much work into the motor.

But Like I said It's just something nice to start with without going to deep into sawing machines oils and the hundreds of other types of oils.

Orthofan and Phono48 simple oiling instructions, for a well working motor, will get you onto the next project.
