Reprints - Suggestions/Votes?

Post by benjaminh »

Due to an overwhelming request, I'm considering republishing more longer (not pamphlets) phonograph related material.

I'm considering doing “The Phonoscope, A Monthly Journal Devoted to Scientific and Amusement Inventions Appertaining to Sound & Sight” (1896-1901). It was published by Russell Hunting, a Columbia man, so it tends to focus more on Columbia products. This magazine tends to have a good deal of humor in it, especially in the “Our Tattler” section. Here's an excerpt: “Len Spencer may be considered to be one of the smart people of the metropolis, but he certainly was not up to his standard recently when he left his gold watch and chain (which he had been using while taking records) on the graphophone rack. He had been called down stairs suddenly, to see a lady friend, and when he returned, imagine his surprise when the above articles were missed. His bank account will be somewhat lessened for a new one. We are very sorry indeed, as we fear Mr. Spencer will not open so many bottles of win for some time.” The ~5 years of this magazine would be printed in a two volume set, and would come out to about 800 pages total.

The other option is to print more of the Talking Machine World. Those of you who have seen my posts on the subject know what the content is like. I could either continue where I left off, or start closer to the end, to get the orthophonic era issues printed. There's plenty of material here, so the chunk I would begin work on would depend on demand.

Member input would be appreciated, and if your away of any other larger publications of interest please let me know. What I basically want to get, is an idea of what you want and are interested in.

I would have interest in continuing the Talking Machine World set, picking up where you left off, with the goal of eventually having a complete set.

I like the idea of the The Phonoscope, since Columbia related material is harder to find...

Would support continuing "Talking Machine World". Think printing "Phonoscope" a splendid idea. Steve

I certainly think taking "The Talking Machine World " reprints in to the electrical period is a great idea. We need to have a completed set.
I would support that wholeheartedly.
While "The Phonoscope" is a good one because we need more Columbia material, how about
consider doing some "Voice of the Victor" or Edison "Diamond Points"?

Phonoscope. Early material is so difficult to find and we are losing so many core older collectors and with that their knowledge. I think you would sell out.

Thanks for the input guys.

Dave: while either "Voice of the Victor" or Edison "Diamond Points" would sound great to me, I've never come across copies of them, physical or digital.

Correction, "The Phonoscope" only ran to June of 1900, not 1901.
