Phonographs in Manhattan?

Post by USlakeside »

This Saturday is my LAST free Saturday for three months. I would love to go hunting for some phonographs in New York City, where I live. I never seem to make it out to see if anything is out there, and I wanted to ask the group if someone knew a good hunting spot. Fairs near the city? Sales in the city? Brooklyn and Queens count too! Thanks!

best,

Nickolas

Hah, good luck... I work in NYC everyday... it's hard enough to find places that 1) even sell records and harder yet 2) sell 78 RPM records... let alone phonographs. You'd probably have better luck in warm weather with the fairs.

When I was in NYC last October I visited the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market. There was a man there with an Edison Standard. He stated that he was helping his partner sell off some excess machines from his collection, and he gave the impression that he was a regular. The machine was grossly overpriced though, but maybe not by NYC standards. Anyway, you can go and check. The flea market was fun even if you don't find a phonograph.

Thanks for the tips. I know its slim pickings. I once found a man who has a basement of 78's and phonographs, but they are regularl machines, standards, columbia Q, and priced reasonably, but not really a bargin. $500 for a nice standard type of prices...
