WANTED: EDISON AMBEROLA MONTHLY'S 1917-1921 (41 issues)

Post by NEFaurora »

Subject: WANTED: EDISON AMBEROLA MONTHLY'S 1917-1921 (41 issues).

Back Story: After Edison published his famous Edison Phonograph Monthly (EPM's)(1903-1916), He started and produced another small publication called The Edison Amberola Monthly . Wendell Moore who produced a series of books in the 1970's and 1980's published copies of all of the Edison Phonograph Monthly (EPM's) in book format. After he was done with those, He made the decision to reproduce ALL 41 issues of the next publication, The EDISON AMBEROLA MONTHLY 1917-1921. He did not reproduce this in book format (which he should have done), but what he did was make 100% actual reproductions of these small pamphlets in a limited amount of sets produced of the original 41 issues. I have been looking for these EDISON AMBEROLA MONTHLY 1917-1921 (41) issues for the past six years to no avail. I got close once, and almost got 40 of the original 41 issues copies from Mark Gaisser (Croakin' Frog), but Mark had sold them before I had a chance to get them from him. If you bought these 40 issues of EDISON AMBEROLA MONTHLY's from Mark or know who did, or you know someone who has a complete set of the 41 Originals or Wendell Moore reproductions of them. Please contact me. I would like to personally scan all 41 issues so I can get them in the Public Domain as that is where they belong for all to read...including myself!..so History is not lost. We all deserve to be able to read these as they are a very valuable part of Edison Factory history. The Edison Phonograph Monthly (EPM's) have now been in the Public Domain for the last three years now at the LOC - Library of Congress website. I will borrow and scan all 41 issues of the EDISON AMBEROLA MONTHLY'S 1917-1921 (41 issues) and gladly return them to you unharmed. It is a small project, but one that I have a great deal of enthusiasm for. This is a project that will benefit all. If you can help out in any way, or have any info or lead on these, Please don't hesitate to contact me at my e-mail: [email protected] or you can PM me here..

Attached are pics of what they look like. The pics of are of the copies that I lost out on a few years ago. Do you know where these are?!?!?

Thank You all.

Check out the pic of the "Amberola Kid" on the 5th pic down on this Original July 1918 issue above. This stuff is priceless. They actually cut up the body of an Amberola 50 and some guy wore it on his head and has boxing gloves on.. Truly priceless.. Advertising knew no ends back then!!!...lol..

Earlier this month, a complete set of Wendell Moore's reprints of The Edison Amberola Monthly was discovered. The entire set is being scanned and will be added to the Antique Phonograph Society's web site very shortly. :)

George, That's Fantastic!!! :o)

I've been waiting to read this "Missing Link" of Edison history and literature for years and years!!

George, You just made my day!!! Literally!!! :o)

Please make sure to come back and update this thread with the weblink when they finally get them posted to the web. I could not think of a better place on the web for them to get posted to than APS.

I don't know exactly how many reprints copies of "The Edison Amberola Monthly" that were originally produced by Wendell Moore in the late 1970's, but it must have been extremely very, very low...probably less than 100-200 set copies I'm guessing, maybe even much lower. In all my years of collecting, I have only seen one set of the Wendell Moore reprints hit ebay, and they were sold by Mark Geisser (A.K.A - "The Frog" (Croakinfrog). I have never seen another set anywhere....literally...and I've been looking!...for years and years!!!

At any rate,

Thank You George P. for letting us know this truly great information. I am dying to read all 41 issues!!!
This is a great day for Edison collectors and a great day for the Antique Phonograph world!!!

It's great that the world with finally get to see this "Missing Link" of Edison history and literature for collectors and historians alike.

I look forward to reading all of them as do others.

Thank You again George.

PS: For those other newbie or Edison Collectors that don't already know, Wendell Moore's copies of the Original "Edison Phonograph Monthly" 14 Volume Series (1903-1916) are fully available to read in all their glory fully FREE and readable/downloadable at the Libraty of Congress (LOC) archive website below:

https://archive.org/details/edisonphonograph01moor

Note: If you change the "01moor" at the end of the web address to "02moor" all the way through "14moor", It will goto all 14 Complete Volumes of the "Edison Phonograph Monthly", and if you click on "PDF" under "Download Options" on the right side of the webpage, It will literally Download the entire EPM Volume to the Download section on your PC hardrive in Windows. You get the idea. Enjoy!

A brief history: The "Edison Phonograph Monthly" Reprints were a 14 Volume hardbound copied set of the Original Edison EPM's from 1903 to 1916. They were actually a private Subscription of books from Wendell Moore (the author) where each year starting from 1976 and ending in 1989, a One Volume copy of an EPM Volume was released for sale. In order to get the whole 14 Volume EPM Set, You had to be a dedicated 14 year subscriber to Wendell Moore. Wendell Moore personally hand signed ALL of the first 500 copied sets (Only all 14 Volume copies were signed if you actually kept the 14 year One Volume subscription, some people did not, that is why some sets are found with only the first 4 thru 7 Volumes for example only hand signed, and not the entire 14 Volume set.) It is thought that there was something like another 100-200 sets that were somehow leftover and went unsigned. That is also why some EPM book Volumes found today have no signature by the author on the first title page. There were only supposed to be a total of 500 or so signed sets produced, but it somehow wound up that like 600 or 700 sets were produced with 100-200 sets being left unsigned. An original Wendell Moore complete 14 Volume EPM Hardbound set today will fetch about $400.00-$550.00 on ebay or the open market with a complete signed set fetching the most, and based on book condition, etc.
