Victor Rigid Swing Arm Screw

Post by Phono-Phan »

A couple of months ago I posted in the Yankee Trader section that I was looking for a swing arm screw for a Victor Rigid Arm machine. I expected one to be almost impossible to find. I didn't get any responses so I decided to figure out how to make one. I have a small jewelers lathe that I always wanted to use. I started with some old Model A Ford bolts. The new bolts just don't have the old steel characteristics. With some trial and error, I ended up with what I needed. It took a LOT of time but was fun to do. I don't have the right tooling to cut small threads. I ended up drilling and tapping the screw to accept a 5-40 stud and used some thread locker to keep in in place. The one picture shows an original screw on the right and the one I made on the left.

Nicely done! I also have a jeweler's lathe-was my dads and I have spent some serious time with it. But when you're done you end up with something you can touch. Even when you are learning you can end up with something you can use. When I am learning on the computer its like "poof" that time is gone and I have nothing I can hold on to. Now I am really showing my age...

Thanks for the kind comments. It is always fun and therapeutic to tinker in the garage on projects like this. As for the Model As, I have a 1930 Coupe, a 1930 Town Sedan, and I am building a 1930 C-Cab panel delivery. It is my goal to have it done up as a phonograph delivery vehicle. I am patterning it after this one I found pictures of.

Somewhere I saw a pic of an actual Victor Dealer's Model A delivery truck and it had been modified to have a cargo box that looked like a table top Victrola. I always thought it would be great to make one like that or with a Victor horn machine as a cargo box...
