Tried Everthing Non Return Spring Squeaking

It squeaks and vibrates slightly when I start winding but after a couple of turns on the winding handle it goes silent. Usually I slide the spring down the winding shaft grease the shaft and it stops but it hasn't.

What make and model phonograph or gramophone is this?


If you could post a photo of the winding gear, that would also help.

I've just spent days on a Parlophone portable trying to cure this very same problem. If it was wound very slowly, I could hear a regular "ticking" sound", as well as a pronounced squeak. I couldn't see anything obvious, so decided to strip the winding gear. Of course, it's all assembled with tapered pins. How does one decide which side to knock them out from? I ended up drilling them out! When I slid the non-return spring off, it was in two pieces! Where the break was, there was a sharp edge on the coil of the spring which was digging into the shaft, and causing the spring to "shudder" and squeak as the shaft rotated.

Of course, it's all assembled with tapered pins. How does one decide which side to knock them out from? I ended up drilling them out!

One usually can spot which end of the taper pin looks smallest. That's the end you place your punch on to drive out the pin. You must have spotted this or you wouldn't have known it's a tapered pin.

I know that any pin holding a component to a shaft is almost certain to be a taper pin, but I've never had to remove one before. It's easy to see which end is which when they are protruding, but this one was flush fitted, and try as I might, I couldn't see which was the smaller end!

O.K., I see where you're coming from now. Actually, taper pins aren't all that universally used but your point is well taken.

I know but the spring is not broken as I have removed it to grease it

I have a few machines that use this system. Honestly, it just seems to be a characteristic of that style spring clutch. In other words, I think it's somewhat normal.

One thing that works for me is to remove the winding shaft, take the spring off the winding shaft, and clean the shaft. Also, clean the inside of the spring. I use PB Blaster and steel wool for cleaning. Put the spring back on the shaft and reassemble. The shaft can get gunked up under the spring and that causes friction that makes the squeak. Don't know what to do about the vibration, this may fix it...
