I have recently bought my first gramophone. I wind it for what seems like a very long time (maybe about 5minutes), and it will only play the record for about 2 minutes before it winds down. As I'm winding there is a clicking sound, like something is slipping.
I wondered if anyone has any advice please?
Thank you

Re: Winding problem
It may be that the mainspring has either broken or come unhooked at the outer end. Do you feel any loss of tension on the crank as you're winding?

Re: Winding problem
Thank you - although there isn't really a loss if tension, there is certainly no build up of tension as I expected there would be.

Re: Winding problem
It looks like you have a broken spring and very sticky grease inside or one of the gears is slowly slipping on its shaft.
There are several "how to" guides for checking, replacing and oiling the springs in this forum. If you need help finding it just ping me and I will look for it.

Pedro

Re: Winding problem
It isn't possible to wind a gramophone for 5 minutes unless
(a) the spring is broken or disconnected
(b) there is a slipping gear in the winding train

Re: Winding problem
Thank you all for the advice. I've managed to find someone, here in London, who services gramophones.I know it's the easy way out, but he's going to take a look at it. He's told me he thinks the spring has gone.
