Edison Home Model D Cases

Post by benjaminh »

I currently have an Edison Home Model D in the shop, and the case it's in has the low profile base, not the tall base like most Model D's. I'm wondering if some Model D mechanisms were put in leftover Model C cases... has anyone seen one before in a clearly untouched state?

Yes. I have at least one completely original Edison Home model D in my collection with the earlier cabinet.

Good to know! This one I have was previously "restored" using rattlcan paint, no decals, and a pretty awful looking stain job on the case. What's the color like of the case you have Doug? Is it the lighter oak like the Model C was (I believe), or the darker color of the Model D?

The earliest Standard Model Ds were likewise supplied with cabinets with the earlier-style low profile base.

I'm not aware of any change in cabinet color after 1905. All the regular-equipment cabinets were described as "Antique Oak." (No change in color between the Model C Home and Model D.)

I have an early Model D Home in the early case. It also has the early pinstriping on the model B's. Does yours have the early pinstriping? I also have an early Fireside with the early pinstriping, too.

Harvey, my Model D was "restored" a couple decades ago. When I received the bedplate had been repainted roughly (including over the data plate) and no pinstriping was present.

I think I can now say that this Model D mechanism was placed in a Model B cabinet now. After stripping the horrible restoration job (looked like a brown tinted poly, completely obscured the grain, etc.) I noticed that there is a banner shaped light spot across the front of the cabinet. I highly doubt that any Model D's left the factory like this. I assume that when it was "restored" someone tried to convert a Model B cabinet to a Model D one, by refinishing with a script decal.
