Damfino59, that's a beautiful beast!

I Totally Agree!
A Late Victor III is the way to go!
Pretty well bulletproof, and as said can be used with a Victrola #4 reproducer for the electrics.

I'm using a brass HMV #4 for electrics on my Vic 1! I need to figure out how to make one work on my front mount E. A little plumbing work, mayhaps...Zwebie wrote:I Totally Agree!

If I could have only one disk horn machine, it would be a Victor III. It has the ideal balance of attributes.

I have to admit that I have a Vic 1, a Vic 5, and an early front mount Vic E, and the side noise on these machines is irritating. It doesn't seem to interfere with the music but it is just annoying. Never having had a III- I should have jumped at the one local to me last week on eBay listed as a $500 opener with a $750 BIN- do these IIIs not suffer from the noise issue?VintageTechnologies wrote:If I could have only one disk horn machine, it would be a Victor III. Do your machines all have the same type of motor?gramophone-georg wrote:I have to admit that I have a Vic 1, a Vic 5, and an early front mount Vic E, and the side noise on these machines is irritating. The early style with the vertical governor do tend to be noisy (I'm thankful that my E is fairly quiet for its type), but the later, worm-drive motors are generally pretty quiet, if properly adjusted.

Couldn't agree more. There's something about them... they just look like a phonograph to me.VintageTechnologies wrote:If I could have only one disk horn machine, it would be a Victor III. It has the ideal balance of attributes.
(And I think the idea of using a pair of external-horn machines in a DJ application is genius. People are gonna love that!)

No, only the E has the upright governor. If there's a way to quiet these down I'd love to know!Lucius1958 wrote:Do your machines all have the same type of motor?gramophone-georg wrote:I have to admit that I have a Vic 1, a Vic 5, and an early front mount Vic E, and the side noise on these machines is irritating. I have a Vic 1, Vic III and a front mount Vic E. The early machines with straight cut gears are noisy. The worm gear motors are definitely quieter unless they are heavily worn. The Edison disk motors are generally the quietest that I have come across.gramophone-georg wrote:I have to admit that I have a Vic 1, a Vic 5, and an early front mount Vic E, and the side noise on these machines is irritating. I love the higher model Victors such as the Vic 5, but those massive motors make them heavier to pick up and move around. A Vic III would be easier for a latter day DJ to lug around.

So, I'd be able to swap out my HMV 5Bs with little problem, then? On a Vic I, III, or III?
I'm hoping to find some III's ... but eyeing a II at the moment. I need to get this done by end of year. Tax write off!
