Re: Do horns amplify sound?
Does anyone know of any tricks or duflickies that can, inconspicuosly, increase the volume coming out of the horn?

Inquiring minds would like to know what duflickies are.

Hi Raphael,
A duflicky (sic) is an Applachian and old tyme word
meaning gadget or contraption.

Definitely not - this is an impossibility - Edisonphonoworks has it spot-on in a previous post when he says "Horns do not amplify sound [energy] but match its impedance, and direct it" (the tonearm forming part of the horn).Expert wrote:In a gramophone system the increasing diameter of the tone-arm and horn creates energy.

Yes indeed---Orchorsol is absolutely correct. It would be wonderful if large horns could create energy---we should all be challenging black holes !Orchorsol wrote:Definitely not - this is an impossibility - Edisonphonoworks has it spot-on in a previous post when he says "Horns do not amplify sound [energy] but match its impedance, and direct it" (the tonearm forming part of the horn).Expert wrote:In a gramophone system the increasing diameter of the tone-arm and horn creates energy.

What fun, you would probably have total monopoly of power generation for the UK at least, emgcr!emgcr wrote:Yes indeed---Orchorsol is absolutely correct. Re: Do horns amplify sound?
...and then the extraterrestrials from the alternate universe who are suddenly missing energy would come through a worm hole, blast our universe to bits, and then drag all our horns back home!

Well, not exactly what you asked for, but perhaps interesting to you, BillyBob62? http://forum.talkingmachine.inf/viewtop ... =7&t=16204billybob62 wrote:Does anyone know of any tricks or duflickies that can, inconspicuosly, increase the volume coming out of the horn?![]()

Re: Do horns amplify sound?
Gregbogantz gave the proper description on the second page of this topic. I suggest people re-read that. The only reason I'm entering this discussion is because of such statements as the air molecules become enlarged or that energy is created as the sound wave propagates. I wish the second statement were true because then we would have a limitless and totally renewable source of energy. There is no additional energy other than what you supply to the mainspring when you wind your machine up. That mainspring is what supplies the power to the turntable, which subsequently through the grooves of your record causes the needle to passively vibrate thus setting up a compression wave that travels through the air. No additional power, no amplification. The air itself does not travel with the wave; rather the air molecules oscillate back and forth creating regions of high and low pressure. They are what propagate. And when they reach your ears they stimulate your auditory nerves. The more auditory nerves stimulated (in a given period of time) the louder a sound appears. What the horn does is channel the energy of the sound wave in a single direction thus intensifying the pressure of the wave along that direction rather than going off isotropically. This is what gregbogantz wrote about. So remember, once you wind your machine up, no additional power is being supplied. The horn merely dissipates the bulk of that power by directing a compression wave in a single direction. If you want to call that amplification, that's fine with me, but technically it's not.

Re: Do horns amplify sound?
Correct. There is absolutely no such thing as "energy creation" in a horn. As this extra energy would be taken from nowhere, the "energy creation" would be an obvious violation of the Conservation Of Energy principle, one of the main pillars of Physics.Orchorsol wrote:Definitely not - this is an impossibility - Edisonphonoworks has it spot-on in a previous post when he says "Horns do not amplify sound [energy] but match its impedance, and direct it" (the tonearm forming part of the horn).Expert wrote:In a gramophone system the increasing diameter of the tone-arm and horn creates energy.
All the available acoustic energy is delivered by the soundbox motion, full stop, it is and stays the same. This amount of energy can be used well with awesome effects, or badly to no avail. Horns help using it especially well.
