WANTED- a recording of THORA

Post by estott »

I'm looking for a recording of the song THORA, by Adams - I had the Richard Crooks version but it was knocked off a table by my cat. It will probably only be found on HMV or other British labels. I'd like the Crooks, but any will do, though I don't really like the Paul Robeson version.

Greetings from down under New Zealand. Being part of the British Commonwealth, you many or may not of herd of Australia's Ambassador of Song, Bass Baritone Peter Dawson. His rendition Of "Thora", is truely remarkable, especially on a four minute Blue Amberol. Sung with passion and gusto! A very popular song in the English domain! I love all his records, on both formats even better on Four Minute Black Wax, though the composition of these records is bloody horrible. He is even better on Two Minute Black Wax and English G@T in his youth .He retired to his place of birth Australia. Died in 1961, the same year I was born! :) Check him out. Did any of his records reach the Yankee shores MarkieMark :)

The Dawson cylinder was originally issued as 4-minute Amberol 12219 in 1909 and later re-issued as Blue Amberol 23002 (British Series) in 1913. Being directly recorded, the BA is excellent and not hard to find in the UK.

On disc there are, in addition to Richard Crooks and Paul Robeson, John Harrison on HMV 02122 and Ruby Helder (known as the lady tenor :o ) on HMV C450. I have never found either of these, but the Harrison recording has been posted on YouTube.
