WANTED: Japanese/Export Victor Orthophonic Reproducer

Post by Oceangoer1 »

This is for my Victor (VV?) 2-12, which I assume is an export model. It is identical to the two portables in the pictures. The soundbox I need looks almost exactly like a regular Orthophonic, but the diameter of the flange opening is much smaller. The tonearm I have fits nicely with a Columbia Viva Tonal reproducer from a portable, so an odd looking Orthophonic reproducer meant for a smaller diameter tonearm. Here are some pictures I took from the internet of the soundbox I need. There were a couple versions like the first one, and then the second one looks different on the front but should have the same back.

I have seen a couple of these reproducers on eBay, but I wasn't sure what they were since they looked a little odd.

If you are referring to the mounting bushing diameter where the reproducer slides onto the bayonet fitting of the gooseneck, is the gooseneck the same size as takes a Victrola # 2 or Exhibition reproducer ?

If so, a different rubber isolater bushing mounted in the back-plate of a # 5 Orthophonic soundbox should do the trick.

Over e-bay this summer, I purchased an Orthponic sound-box that had been refitted with a different isolater bushing, one that allows it to be fitted to the earlier Victor goosenecks.

I am not certain if it is an isolator for a Victrola # 2, or if it is someone's custom creation, but it works well... so well that I am reluctant to remove it to fit a proper Orthophonic bushing.

At any rate, it maybe a simpler matter to find a bushing than a custom Ortho box ?

I did check that out this morning. A No. 2 isolator is too big for the tonearm. However, the tonearm where the reproducer connects is bent, so I probably need to fix that before I start sizing things.

I probably could put a few rounds of Teflon to build fill the gap, and because it still has the notch where the isolator pin will fit, it will still be a locking fit and not a pressure fit. I was just wondering if anyone happened to have one :)

I don't think teflon plumber's tape will do what you want it to.

It's slick stuff.

If you need to build-up the bayonet mount a bit, try vinyl electrical tape. It's stretchy, flexible, but will stay put. you can cut a slit to open-up the locking notch.

If you need to remove it, simply un-peel, and wipe off any adhesive residue with Ronsonol (lighter fluid).

The idea of an odd-size mount puzzles me for a Victor product, even it it is an export model.

I believe the HMV reproducer mounts are the same size as the US versions...

I don't think Victor would have made extra versions of sotck products if they didn't have to ...

How much too big is the internal diameter of the # 2 isolater ?
