The VV-VI is a good machine and hopefully will clean up well.

I would go for the VV-VI rather than a rough VV-IX in mahogany. I have an early VV-VI with from 1912 with the 10" turntable and early motors etc. and I love it! It plays well and does not take up alot of room. Rather than have a VV-IX, I would prefer a VV-VIII, the one I have is really nice size and plays about as well as a VV-IX.
For serious Victrola listening, I resort to my VV-XI tabletop which has the 12" turntable and belts out great sound, however VV-XI tabletops are not very common and can be a little more pricey for a first phonograph.
