I've been rescuing less important antiques for years and hand building my own furniture.

On NEW wood, nothing beats boiled linseed oil

to fill in scratches, I use teak oil for the base of the crack where the wood is visibl (or BLO if bad)

Spray on wax, Lidle 59p or Pledge in Canada works wonders as a final coat.

Give a good rub to ach as you go.

Steel wool- really, really fine, There are 3 layers, the wood surface that has been impregnated, the clear undamaged surface, and the crazed, oxidized, scratched top.

Don't go through to the wood, you will never match impregnated wood with raw wood.

Just get rid of the top, damaged layer, like when you cut paste an old car

Then teak oil or wax. I want a tarted up old girl, because that's what she is.
